The Southern Andes Mountains

Mountain LakeSeparating Chile from Argentina and running the full length of the South American continent, the Andes Mountains is the longest and one of the highest mountain ranges in the world.  Over 7000 km in length and 500 km wide in some parts, and extend into seven different countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela).

The highest mountain in the area around Bariloche is Mount Tronador, or Thunder Mountain.  It is 3491 meters high, and is home to seven glaciers (Frias, Alerce, Castaño Overo, Manso, Peulla, Casa Pangue y Río Blanco).  Although not one of the highest mountains in the Andes, it is considered an intermediate challenge to mountaineers and a great place to learn the sport.

View from the AndesThe Club Andino in Bariloche was founded in 1931, and administers the trails and huts located throughout the Nahuel Huapi National Park. They can help with maps, offer courses related to mountain sports, and organize outings for adults and children.  The main office is located downtown Bariloche.
